Designer's Blog: So many features, so little space

Hi

Hi, my name is Lasse Lehmusvaara. I am responsible for the visual quality of our games and with Commander "Conquest of the Americas" of late, the UI of the game.

After our last game East India Company we sat down and chewed trough all the major issues of the game interface. Based on our own experiences of the game and all the feedback from our fans we scrapped things that weren't working out that well and made the good ones even better. At the same time we knew that our next game Commander: Conquest of the Americas would be more complex and deep so bringing this complexity in the game logically trough all different kinds of UI windows was really a challenge for us.

You see we understand that typical strategy players expect a degree of difficulty in the UI, however what we wanted to avoid was twofold:

A. we want to avoid scaring potential strategy players away because of a complicated UI
B. we don't want to have core strategy players deterred because of a overly accessible UI

See my dilemma?

Well hopefully we hit the nail on the head, see for yourself by checking in both the tactical level and strategic level interface screenshot sections.

Pictures speak loader than words!

Rock on!

Lasse Lehmusvaara
